Transition Farm produces and sells high quality, 100% certified organic and Demeter biodynamic seeds, carefully bred to perform in low-input systems. Our breeding focuses on key traits - vigour, flavour, yield, beauty, disease resistance, and adaptability to local conditions. With strong genetics and natural resilience, our organically grown seeds are built to thrive in organic gardens and farms.
We are dedicated to the Australian Demeter Bio-dynamic method of farming - nurturing whole farm ecosystems and building and maintaining healthy soil. We believe plants grown in living soil, who's growth is guided by sunlight produce seeds capable of forming robust root systems. Resilience- to pests and disease, to less then ideal growing conditions, to climate stress - is a generational story held in a seed.
We are passionate about supporting and being part of a hearty network of growers developing and maintaining living soils, contributing to healthy communities and ensuring food sovereignty. Transition Farm seed is used by commercial growers and nurseries Australia wide.
Here are the crops we are sowing in September. This is a very busy month in our glasshouse and our fields as we watch seeds transform into roots and shoots and incorporate our green manure crops, apply prepared biodynamic 500 to encourage the dynamic humus building and transplant crops!
Butter lettuces are truly the Belle’s of the Spring ball. After a Winter of eating hardy cos type lettuces, the delicate nature of the butter lettuces is so welcome. The soft sometimes suede like texture and buttery flavour is delightful eaten raw, with a bit of salt, or topped with freshly shelled peas, radish and a simple vinegarette.

“We have had fabulous success with Transition Farm’s vegetable, herb and flower seed. All varieties have been carefully trialled by Robin and Peter for suitability in our SE Australian climate and for superior growth and flavour. Their seed is 100% certified organic and biodynamically grown, harvested, dried and packed on Transition Farm. I can highly recommend their seed and respect their commitment to looking after their farm and the broader environment in the sustainable manner that they do.”

"We've never seen such happy seedlings as those we've raised using your seed - they display extreme vigour and keep on going when transplanted out - zero transplant shock being the most striking feature."

October is the month that finds us questioning- should we transplant NOW?
We base our transplant date on nighttime temperatures. Many of the cold sensitive crops such as tomatoes, basil, eggplant, capsicum, zucchini can be permentantly set back if transplanted too early. We mitigate this risk by using row covers and poly tunnels.
We have made a simple temperature chart to assist.
