California Poppy 'Thai Silk Appleblossom Chiffon'

A$5.25

Eschscholzia californica

  • Very easy to grow

  • Profuse bloomer throughout late spring, summer and autumn

  • From the stunning ‘Thai Silk’ range

Easy to grow, eucalyptus gray green feathery foliage with apple blossom pink buds which open to reveal silky single and double blooms that are cream with pink stripes. 'Thai Silk' is a stunning range of California poppies. The petals look like silk fabric and the richly coloured stripes soften with age from deep pink to soft pink, creamy petals surrounding a soft yellow pollen centre - the whole look is quite sophisticated. Profuse bloomer throughout the late spring, summer and autumn. Very easy to grow, drought tolerant, attractive to pollinators and perfect for cutting.

Although each bloom does not have a long vase life, buds continue to open and we love how they change with blooms at different stages and colours. The wedding dress like texture and colour is delicate and sophisticated for special occasions.

Well suited to the front border of a garden bed. We cut the plants to the ground and they regrow and bloom again!

DIRECT SEED (recommended): Germination benefits from one week of cold stratification. Sow directly after danger of frost has past. Poppies do not tolerate root disturbance. Sow 1mm deep into prepared soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow in short drills with rows 30cm apart. Germination takes 14-21 days at 20°C. Thin seedlings to 15cm spacing by early summer.

TRANSPLANT: Not Recommended as poppies do not like root disturbance. We have been successful though with soil blocks. Sow 4-6 weeks before transplant date putting 2-3 seeds per cell. Lightly cover with vermiculite. Plants enjoy growing at cooler night temperatures (13-14°C). Plants can get leggy.

HARVEST/VASE LIFE: Harvest blooms as coloured buds and before bees find them. Individual flowers are short lived—lasting 3 to 4 days but as buds will continue to open on cut stems, you can have a week’s worth of blooms.

NOTE: Should flower in the first year. Cut and come again variety. Cut flowers regularly to encourage growth and to prolong flowering window. Deadhead if you do not want it to self-seed. In some climates, may be a short lived perennial. Often noted as a self seeding annual.
