Nigella sativa

Delicate foliage becomes densely covered in buds that open revealing blues in colour grades - from deep, brilliant to light sky blue , multilayered petals surrounding sea anemone like stamen and an interesting seed pod. The flowers have with a great vase life and add a whimsy to bouquets.

The seed pods slowly swell into striped green and brown red balloons which can be used in arrangements (fresh and dried). The seeds are edible with a delightful savoury sweetness. Succession plant every 2-4 weeks for continual harvest.

Seed Raising, Growing and Harvest Information

DIRECT SEED (recommended) — Sow in early spring when soil temperatures reach 15°C. Autumn sow where winters are mild. Cover lightly with soil as light is required for germination.

TRANSPLANT — As plants are sensitive to root disturbance, sow into soil blocks. Plan to transplant within 6 weeks – before roots the edge of the blocks.

HARVEST/VASE LIFE- Harvest flowers when fully open and before seed pods begin to swell. Vase life of 5-7 days can be extended with preservative. Use the pods fresh or dried in bouquets.
