Atriplex hortensis

Unique, shimmering seed pod that adds interest to bouquets, an edible cool and hot season green, orach is easy to grow, wonderful to eat and a great, unusual bouquet filler.

With a long history of being cultivated as a garden vegetable in the Mediterranean, dating back to around 2000 BC , this “mountain spinach” is heat and cool tolerant.

The seed pods are the bouquet filler with their unusual colouring and look.

DIRECT SOW: Orach does well in any well-drained garden soil. Tolerant of both hot and cold weather, it is best planted early spring through midsummer. Sow seeds 6mm deep, 2.5-5cm apart, in rows spaced 45-75cm apart for seed production. Thin the edible greens to to 20-30cm apart.

TRANSPLANT: We have had great. results sowing early in our glasshouse and transplanting in spring. Sow 1-2 seeds per cell, 6mm deep. Cover with vermiculite. Transplant n 5 weeks, spacing plants 20-30cm apart in rows 45cm apart (for seed pod production).

HARVEST/VASE LIFE: Can be harvested in the foliage stage or once seedpods have formed. Immediately after harvesting foliage, dip the bottom few inches of the stems in boiling water for 7 to 10 seconds, then place into cool water. Seeded stems require no special treatment. Expect a vase life of 7 to 14 days.
