DIRECT SOW – Direct seed as soon as soil can be worked in the spring. Soil pH should be over 6.0. Cool and mild weather is preferred, though silverbeet has some heat tolerance. Seeds germinate in soil temperatures from 5–38°C with an optimum germination temperature of 30°C. Seedlings will tolerate light frosts, and mature plants will tolerate moderate frosts. Silverbeet may overwinter in mild areas.

Full Size: Sow about 6 seeds/30cm, 1-2cm deep, rows 30-45cm apart from midspring and on into autumn (where winter is mild). Thin to 15-20cm apart for larger leaves. Baby Leaf: Sow 1cm deep at 1seeds/cm in rows at least 5cm apart from midspring into autumn (where winter is mild). Planting too densely can lead to overcrowding and stunted growth.

TRANSPLANT (recommended) - Sow 2-3 seeds per cell, 1-2cm deep covering with vermiculite, 4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Thin to 1–2 plants per cell. Harden plants off by reducing water and air temperature 2-3 days before transplanting. Transplant out 15-20cm apart in rows 30-45cm apart.
