Capsicum 'Sweet Bullnose'

A$5.25

Capsicum annuum

  • Productive

  • Heavy Yield

  • Full Flavored green fruit- Ripening to a robust, sweet red bell shaped, 4 lobed capsicum

  • Sweet Bullnose is a centuries old heirloom.

Very productive with a robust, rich, sweet taste when mature, the green peppers have a fullness in flavour unmatched in many hybrid varieties.

Trialed in the field and in an unheated poly tunnel, the plants displayed great leaf coverage, protecting the many fruit from su scald as they ripened from green to red.

Although not as early ripening as ‘King of the North’ in our 37° latitude, the plants are more productive and make a great companion - allowing an early and midseason heavy harvest.

The ribs within the red mature peppers are not as sweet as the flesh.

Our current stock seed originated from Twin Oaks Farm and we appreciate their work in resurrecting this variety and selecting for variety maintenance. We have selected for early maturation, plant architecture and leaf cover, sweet flavour when mature and overall productivity.

TRANSPLANTS (recommended)- Sow seeds into shallow flats, 4 seeds/2.5cm about 8 weeks prior to transplanting. If possible, maintain soil temperatures at 27-32°C. Capsicum seeds germinate very slowly in cooler soil. When the first true leaves appear, transplant seedlings into 5cm cell-type containers or 10cm pots. Grow plants at approx. 21°C day and 16°C nights. Harden off plants by slightly reducing temperature to 15-18°C and reducing water for 2-3 days before transplanting.

Transplant out after frost when the soil is warm and weather is settled. Ideal seedlings have buds, but no open flowers. Set plants 30-45cm apart in rows 60-90cm apart, or 2 rows with 45cm between plants.

NOTE – 'Days to Maturity' are from transplant to green fruit. Fruit continues to mature on the plant to yellow. The flavour also sweetens as the fruit fully matures.
