Perilla frutescens

Eye-catching deep green leaves with dusky burgundy undersides, Perilla or Shiso features prominently in many Vietnamese, Japanese and Thai cuisines. Versatile flavour profile enables use in both savoury and sweet dishes.

Easy to grow.

Good salad mix item, or use larger leaves as sushi wraps or garnishes. Mild mint/basil aroma. Also good for ornamental use. Leaves show best color contrast when grown in temperatures below 29ºC.

The flowers are a flavorful addition to salads and Asian dishes. Pairs well with fish, rice, noodles, and cucumbers. The minty, basil-like flavor has hints of clove and cumin.

DIRECT SEED (recommended) - Store seed in the freezer for best germination. Sow in spring after the last frost, 1-2 seeds every 2.5cm, in rows 45cm apart. Sow seeds shallowly, can cover lightly with a very thin layer of vermiculite to ensure seed soil contact, as light is required for germination. Keep evenly moist until germination. Can grow somewhat thickly, or thin to 15-30cm apart.

TRANSPLANT - Sow seeds 6-8 weeks before transplant date, shallowly, 1-2 seeds per cell. Lightly sprinkle with vermiculite as seed requires light to germinate. Keep moist to help crack seed coating. Transplant in spring when nighttime temperatures are steadily above 10˚C. Perilla thrives in full sun to partial shade in medium to rich, sandy soils. Perilla is not frost hardy. Keep evenly watered as plants will suffer if allowed to dry out.

NOTE - Allow transplants to become established, and then grow as you would basil — pinch growing tips regularly to produce bushier plants with more leaves
