Spinach 'Butterflay'
Spinach 'Butterflay'
Spinacia oleracea
· Productive
· 3 season vigour
· Great flavour and incredible colour
· Spring/ Autumn/ Winter variety
With a juicy, rich minerally flavour, large deep intense green glossy leaves and its innate ability to withstand bolting longer than other varieties, we choose ‘Butterflay’ as our Spring/ Autumn/Winter spinach. Exhibiting great vigour, it jumped ahead of other varieties in our Spring spinach variety trial. In a late Spring planting, it was the last to go to seed. And it has over-wintered well in our unprotected garden. All spinach prefers cool season growing, but its ability to withstand hotter temperatures has allowed us to sow it in late Summer for early Autumn harvest.

DIRECT SOW – (recommended) - Direct seed as soon as soil can be worked in the spring, and again in the late summer-early fall. Sow seeds 1cm deep ad water well. Seed germinates best when soil temperatures are 4-15°C and performs well when air temperatures are 12-15°C.
TRANSPLANT - Sow 3 seeds per cell, 1cm deep covering with fine vermiculite, 3–4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Harden plants off by reducing water and air temperature 2-3 days before transplanting.
NOTE – Spinach thrives in fertile and moist soil. Spinach prefers a pH of 6.5-7. Successive plantings every 21 days ensure a continuous harvest. Summer sowing in soil over 30°C risks low or erratic germination. If sowing must be done during warmer weather, irrigating can help cool the soil and improve germination.
