Tomato 'Carbon'
Tomato 'Carbon'
Solanum lycopersicum
With rich, complex flavours and the meaty texture of a classic black tomato, Carbon produces excellent yields of blocky round fruits with dark shoulders fading to very dark red over a longer season than similar types.
Heirloom variety with complex flavour
Highly productive with longer season
Good resistance to cracking and disease.
Indeterminate
We grew heirloom tomatoes for both our CSA and restaurants. We were always on the hunt for an heirloom variety with complex flavour that was also highly productive, had disease resilience, was easy to manage in the field with a Florida weave system and added a unique colour or shape to our extensive mix. Carbon received high scores on our taste tests and performed well in the field, earning its inclusion in our selection.

TRANSPLANT (recommended) – Start transplants 5- 6 weeks before planting date. Sow seeds 6mm deep, 4 seeds/2.5cm. Lightly cover. Keep mix at 23-28°C. Pot up into 5cm or larger cells after first set of true leaves appear. For growing transplants, maintain temperature at around 22°C during the day and 18°C at night
Harden off plants by slightly reducing temperature to 15-18°C and reducing water for 2-3 days before transplanting.
NOTE - Don't start too early—leggy, root-bound, or flowering transplants can cause stunting and reduce early production. Avoid exposing unprotected plants to consecutive nightly temperatures below 7°C.
