Millie explores a farm with a focus on seeds and their potential to provide both beauty and food security 2023

On the southern tip of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is a 3-ha block where Robin Koster-Carlyon and Peter Carlyon decided to set up small-scale farm. The originally ran it as a market garden growing vegetables, and Robin committed herself to learning everything she could about soil management, but she soon realised that it was all worthless without good seed.

Transition Farm now focuses on producing high-quality seed of vegetables, flowers and herbs that are grown to suit local conditions.

You might think the backstory of something as teeny, tiny as a plant seed is not, in the scheme of things, going to make a whole lot of difference to the success of your garden. Getting seeds – any seeds – into the earth is likely your priority by this point in spring.

But now that many of us are making compost, doing away with chemicals and increasing plant diversity, attention is starting to fall on the role seeds can play in making our gardens more environmentally friendly.
