Scabiosa stellata
**NOT TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA**
- Unusual spherical, geometric bronzy papery seed heads
- Profusion of 3-4cm blooms that develop into star balls
- The colour and texture add interest to bouquets and design work
- Easy to grow
- Beloved by beneficial insects and pollinators
With smaller and more subtle pincushion flowers that are white with a very slight blue tinge, it would be easy to dismiss this scabiosa. But these flowers develop into the most unusual and beautiful spherical, geometric papery seed heads. They are bronzy with lovely lines of deep purple and lime green centres.
Held high on long strong stems, these ‘star balls’ ( translation of the German name ‘Sternkugal’ ) mix well in cut bouquets adding an element of interest. They are essentially dry at this stage and hold well for months.

TRANSPLANT (recommended) - Sow 4-6 weeks before last frost. Barley cover as light aids germination. Transplant to larger containers when the first true leaves appear. Harden off and transplant outside after last frost.
DIRECT SEED - After last frost. Successive plantings every 3-4 wks until late Spring gives best quality flowers and pods.
HARVESTING - The seed heads are best harvested when they still retain the shades of purple and green. If you leave them to go fully brown, they easily fall apart.
