- Fully savoyed leaves
- Fast-growing and productive
- Three-season vigour
- Ideal for spring, autumn and early winter growing
Equinox is a an Improved OP Bloomsdale-type especially for spring and fall.
Fast-growing, the plants produce an abundance of large, deep green, fully savoyed leaves with an exceptional juicy, rich, mineral flavour. This improved, slow-bolting selection of the classic Bloomsdale offers excellent uniformity and outstanding performance across spring, autumn and early winter.
The vigorous upright plants produce heavily crinkled leaves on long stems, making harvesting quick and efficient for both baby leaf and full-sized bunching. Its extended harvest window and reliable three-season performance make it an excellent choice for succession sowing, market growers and home gardeners alike.
Bred by the late Dr. John Navazio, this variety was developed specifically with organic production in mind and thrives in organically managed soils. Whether harvested young for tender salad leaves or allowed to mature for cooking, it consistently delivers abundant harvests of nutritious, flavour-rich spinach.

DIRECT SOW (Recommended) – Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, and again in late summer to early autumn. Sow seeds 1cm deep and water well. Spinach germinates best in cool soil, with an optimum germination temperature of 20-23°C. Spinach grows best when air temperatures are 12–15°C. Cooler soil temperatures will increase the time to germination.
Begin sowing in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked.
Summer sowing into soils above 30°C may result in poor or erratic germination.
TRANSPLANT – Sow 3 seeds per cell, 1cm deep, and cover with fine vermiculite 3–4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Harden plants by gradually reducing watering and exposing them to cooler air temperatures for 2–3 days before transplanting.
Transplanting can help ensure full stands if germination has been difficult, either because of warm soil temperatures or diseases like damping off.
NOTE – Spinach thrives in fertile, moist soil with a preferred pH of 6.5–7.0. Make successive sowings every 21 days for a continuous harvest. If sowing during warmer weather is unavoidable, irrigating before sowing can help cool the soil and improve germination.
