'Fingal' is a dependable self-blanching celery producing beautiful apple-green stalks 45–60cm tall. The crisp, tender stems are exceptionally juicy, naturally sweet and free from the stringiness often found in older celery varieties, making them equally suited to fresh eating and cooking.

One of 'Fingal's' greatest strengths is its ability to perform consistently in less-than-ideal conditions. It matures early, produces uniform plants and has proven remarkably reliable across a wide range of growing seasons, making it equally valuable for home gardeners and market growers.

For best results, sow early in spring but wait until night temperatures remain above 15°C before transplanting, as prolonged exposure of young plants to temperatures below 13°C may trigger bolting. In our Southern Victorian climate, February sowings provide productive winter harvests with only light frost protection.

Since 2020 we have continued selecting 'Fingal' for vigour, early maturity, rich mineral flavour and the ability to thrive without additional compost side dressings. These selections have consistently performed well in our low-input growing system, producing reliable harvests where many other celery varieties struggle.

'Fingal' has been grown by market gardeners on the Mornington Peninsula for generations, and after years of selection it remains one of the most dependable celery varieties we know.

Seed Raising, Growing and Harvest Information

TRANSPLANT (recommended) - Celery seed is slow to germinate. Start seeds 10 weeks before desired transplant date.
Sow several seeds per cell on the surface as they require light to germinate. Lightly sprinkle vermiculite over a slight depression - This will help maintain moisture necessary for germination. Keep evenly moist; germination is uneven and takes up to 21 days. Or sow in a line, pricking out when plants have developed 2 true leaves and growing on in flats or soil blocks. Continue to grow seedling, providing ample moisture until it has three or four true leaves.

Celery is a heavy feeding and requires soil rich in organic matter. Transplant at 30cm spacing or 20cm in rows 50cm apart. Celery requires ample moisture to remain juicy and non fibrous.

Celery is commonly blanched by hilling to maintain tenderness and flavor.

Plants are known in some cases to cause skin irritation in the field. Wear protective clothing and/or gloves to avoid exposure.
