Allium porrum

Late Summer/Early Autumn pale green leek with vigorous growth for the earliest harvest of sizable shanks.

  • Vigorous growth
  • Good disease resistance
  • Delicate flavour
  • Early producer

A more delicate flavoured early season leek than any we have tried. Impressive early shank growth which is suited for baby leek production. Disease resilience throughout Winter and continued shank growth. Dutch bred.

In the leek trial we ran in 2019-2020, we sowed in mid-late October and harvested in mid April, early June and early September. ‘Lincoln’ compared to both ‘King Richard’ and ‘Varna’ in its incredible early season production of a long shank. This was achieved without additional hilling.

We have found that early season leeks are sharper in flavour to Winter leeks. Lincoln surpassed our other pale green leeks in flavour. While not as buttery as our favorite Winter leek ‘Delft’, ‘Lincoln’ was surprisingly delicate even in the Early harvest window especially when compared to the flavour of ‘King Richard’ and ‘Varna’.

Our coastal aspect does not experience freezing Winters. Even still, ‘Lincoln’ held better throughout our cold winter with frosts and continued to grow its shank – increasing the already sizable usable shank portion by 40% without any additional in field hilling. We have read that it is not a variety for freezing winters. It also showed great disease resilience, not secombing to bacterial blight and rust which did plague some of the varieties in the late Winter evaluation, we had only a 10% loss of saleable leeks (compared with a 50-80% in the other early season varieties) with an increase in overall weight of the shank.

The flavour is slightly sharper then the more buttery flavour of ‘Delft’ but still the lovely delicate flavour expected of leeks. ‘Lincoln’s early season harvest dates, versatility (in being good for baby leek production as well as full size leek) and ability to hold in the field would always make it a welcome addition to our leek planting.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not rely on one leek for our leek production but use 4 varieties to cover our leek harvest from March – September!

Thank you to Uprising Seed for bringing this leek to our attention! Our current stock seed has been grown out from their seed selection.
