Lettuce 'Chez le Bart' Butter

An heirloom blonde-green butter lettuce with fine red blushing along the leaf margins. In our variety taste trials, Chez Le Bart had a complex, fresh, mineral flavour that stood out completely raw, where as other varieties needed salt and/or an acidic dressing to shine. Large framed butter with the classic soft leaves and a beautiful light green colour with its tell tale red tips.

An heirloom variety that has been preserved by Sativa, a partner in ProSpecieRara, a Swiss foundation for the cultural and genetic diversity of plants and animals.

In Southern Victoria, we transplanted these in a polytunnel in late Winter for earliest Spring harvests. Chez Le Bart is also one of the varieties we put in the fields early in Spring as it can handle the cooler night time temperatures. We also found that Chez reliably produced beautiful buttery heads in late Autumn/early Winter. We are in an early Winter frost pocket and so we did protect these heads.
