Lettuce 'Yugoslavian Red' Butter

A red blushed butterhead heirloom with wine dipped buttery leaves that are glossy and blanch a creamy yellow white heart with red speckles. Heirloom from Marburg, Yugoslavia (now Slovenia) and first introduced to the US by Southern Exposure Seed Exchange in 1987, we grew ‘Yugoslavian Red’ searching for a deeper red butter lettuce. While not as deep red as other varieties, we loved its flavour and appearance and its quickness in Spring made it a favourite. We refined our selection to include heads that form in flash Spring heat and are slow to bolt.
