Salvia officinalis

  • Essential perennial culinary herb with aromatic, silvery-green evergreen foliage.
  • Rich, earthy flavour ideal for stuffings, sauces, sausages, roasted vegetables, teas and herb blends.
  • Highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.
  • Drought-tolerant plant suited to herb gardens, borders and containers.
  • Traditionally valued for its digestive properties and excellent for drying, preserving and floral crafts.

Common Sage is a timeless Mediterranean herb that has earned its place as an essential in kitchen gardens for centuries. Forming an attractive evergreen shrub of soft, silvery-green leaves, it is as ornamental as it is practical, providing fresh harvests year-round in mild climates.

Highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects, sage is an excellent companion plant for the orchard. Flowering at a similar time to many fruit trees, particularly apples and pears, it helps attract pollinators when they are needed most.

Renowned for its warm, earthy and slightly peppery flavour, sage is indispensable in stuffings, roasted meats, sausages, sauces, herb butters and savoury vegetable dishes. The aromatic leaves dry exceptionally well, retaining both their fragrance and flavour for use throughout the year.

Beyond the kitchen, Common Sage has a long history of traditional herbal use, where it has been valued as a digestive tonic and for supporting general wellbeing. Its attractive foliage also makes an excellent addition to dried floral arrangements, wreaths and herbal crafts.
