Helianthus annuus

  • Fully double 7.5-12.5 cm blooms
  • Minimal Pollen
  • Excellent cut flower
  • Suitable for beds and containers
  • Branching – multiple flowers per plant
  • Easy to grow
  • Pollinator friendly

A wonderfully fluffy, branching sunflower producing fully double, lemon-yellow blooms with soft lime-green centres. The densely petalled, 7.5–12.5cm flowers have an almost pompom-like appearance and produce minimal pollen.

Great for garden beds, container plantings, and short-stemmed cut flowers.

Similar in flower form to the well-known ‘Teddy Bear’ sunflower, ‘Gummy Bear’ is distinguished by its cooler, lighter lemon-yellow colouring and abundant branching and flowering.

Direct Sow (recommended): Sunflowers dislike root disturbance.  To avoid injuring the roots, start in soil blocks or direct sow.  Sunflowers germinate best at 21-24°C.  Sow 2-3 seeds per 20-30cm.  Thin to one seedling per hole. May require protection from birds and rodents who love fresh sunflower shoots!!  Sow in final container, placing 1 seed per 6" pot or 3 seeds per gallon container, 3-4 weeks prior to planting out.

Transplant: Start seed indoors in trays 3 weeks before transplanting into soil that is above 20°C. Use soil blocks to avoid root disturbance. Transplant out after all danger of frost has passed allowing 20-30cm between plants. Succession plant every 2-3 weeks to stagger harvest.

Harvesting/Vase Life: Pick when petals are showing but before they reveal the centre. Expect a vase life of 7-10 days.

NOTES:
Flower size and stem diameter are controlled by plant spacing, temperature, soil type, and day length.
